Macoma balthica (L.) is a common infaunal tellinid bivalve that throughout most of its North Atlantic distribution range has been observed to make conspicu-ous, often U-shaped crawling tracks on the sediment surface in intertidal habitats (Brafield and Newell 1961, Swennen 1969, Lim and Green 1991, K. N. Mouritsen pers. obs.).

Macoma balthica typically occurs in the coastal zone of the Belgian part of the North Sea. In the 1976-1986 period only low densities were observed (up to 10 ind./m2) whereas densities up to 170 ind./m2 were found in the 1994-2001 period.
